2023 Men's College World Series Post Game Interviews

Game 1 Florida vs TCU Post-game opening statement from Florida Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan,

"First of all, want to congratulate TCU on an unbelievable season. Put a freshman out there, biggest game of his life. And catcher's a freshman, and the big lefty they put in, Abeldt, is a freshman.
They couldn't have asked more from their young players and all of their players. To get to this point is an unbelievable accomplishment and I know they're disappointed.
But they certainly belong here and I need to congratulate them on a great year.

As far as the game today, Jac was really good. (Indiscernible) pitchers as we need to, and he'll probably say otherwise, but at the end of the day he bent but didn't break if that makes any sense.
He made some big pitches. And I think Ryan Slater coming in and recording five outs is huge. We didn't have to go to Cade as early as we possibly wanted to. And Brandon did his thing at the end.
Excited to be moving on. Obviously Cade's hit in the 6 hole was huge, put us ahead. Really pleased with how Brandon bounced back from the eighth. And obviously Josh's two-run home to put us on the board was really good for the momentum. Played really good defense. And just look forward to getting started again on Saturday".

Question : Josh, can you talk about the home run?
What was going through your mind once you hit it out of the park?

Answer:  Yeah, got into the at-bat, we knew he had a good fastball that played well up in the zone and he could command his off speed pretty well.
I wasn't really looking for anything specific. But I was just trying downtown for the heater and he came first pitch slider. And I didn't let that take me away from my approach. I stayed on the fastball and luckily I saw it pop out of his hand and got a hanging slider that I could put a good swing on.
It was huge for our momentum definitely to get us up early in the game. And I just think it was a very big moment for my team. So it was special.

Opening Statement : I couldn't be more proud of our program and our players. Obviously ran up against a great Florida team and just came up one run short.
But like I told them, just the story and the journey that they took us on this year will never be forgotten. I think it completely changes our program in terms of what they did from the middle part of the season until now. It just stinks that it's over. But I've never been more proud of a group.

Question : What are you most excited about for the future of TCU baseball coming back? And then you mentioned earlier about the people behind the scenes. Could you kind of, if you could, tell a story that may have, like, made your year that we may not know about that the people have impacted you behind the scenes?
Answer : I mean, there's so many stories. One that pops in my head right now is our managers. You know, they donate their time to TCU baseball. They're there longer than we are, whether it be shagging fly balls or helping hit fungos or doing the laundry. Those are the people that make a program special is when you have people that don't ever get any credit, they're kind of behind the scenes, they don't get the credit, but they make our program go. To our bullpen catchers. It's all those things. You don't really realize until you don't have those people that want to donate their time. And we have a huge manager pool of kids who just love TCU baseball and love to serve. And those guys are pretty special in our program and they're treated just like our players are.
And TCU baseball, we haven't been here in six years. And the guys were tired of looking at the 2010, 2014, '15, '16 and '17 signs in left field and the old pictures that are in our classroom to all those different things. And we'll have some updating to do because this group did some special things that are going to be, they'll be able to come back and show their kids and do all those things because they definitely, I think, was one of the best stories of the year in terms of who they are and what they did. And, so, super proud of the fact that they won't feel it right now. But when they come up for air and understand and realize how difficult it is to get here and the way they played, there's some long-lasting memories that won't go away.

Post-game interview with
LSU Pitchers Griffin Herring
Riley Cooper

Question : Riley and Griffin, can you talk about Griffin's performance;
and, Griffin, could you talk about the big outing from Riley at the end there?

RILEY COOPER Answer : It was huge. He killed up a lot of innings and threw good. He's been doing that all year. It was really cool to see him do it here on the big stage.
GRIFFIN HERRING Answer : We all knew what he was going to do. He's Coop: comes in, closes it out. Had his fastball working. A lot of ride. That's just what he does.

Question : You used two pitchers today. Could you just talk about how big -- even though the outcome isn't the way you wanted it -- how big those guys stepped up for you to save some arms for tomorrow?

Answer : It was huge. When we're down three we're in between whether to go to Sully or piece it together with some other guys and save Sully for tomorrow. We felt like we'd score.
We had opportunities to score. We had runners on base you but just couldn't get the big hit.
Again, Herring was the difference. Me not walking Beloso and Herring, that was the different in the game today. I don't think he has thrown 80 pitches all game. I don't think he's thrown 80 pitches in a week all year, based on the numbers. And he went out there and gave them 80 really good pitches. He was the difference.

Answer : PAUL SKENES: I've gotten to talk with Ben a lot. And he called a lot of our games. Obviously had a really good career at LSU and in the Major Leagues. It's cool. And it's cool to leave a legacy.

Question : Rhett, you made history tonight, breaking the Wake Forest single-season strikeout record. From all the guys who played before you, what's it like to be part of that historical record?
Answer : I mean, Josh Hartle broke it the last time he was out there. I wish he would have had another chance to pitch and he would have broke it again. I'm super proud of him.
It's an honor to be listed with the guys before me. I'm excited for Josh and what his career is going to look like.

Question : Wyatt, does it make it a little bit more extra special because it's an SEC matchup? And the conference as a whole, whether it's college football, basketball, just dominates college sports.
How for you, as an athlete, does that excite you?

WYATT LANGFORD Answer : Excites me a lot. Being a part of the SEC, we're the best conference in baseball. And I believe that all the way. So just match up with them kind of makes sense for all the fans out there and everyone that knows baseball. So we're all excited to play.

Question : Tre', two-part question for you. Can you talk about the fan base behind you guys last night? And what's it like to have another SEC team facing you in the championship?
TRE' MORGAN Answer : I mean, we have the best fans in the country. And that showed last night. It was awesome, celebrating with our guys on the field and then we turn and we look at the fans and they're all on the rail standing up, cheering, chanting LSU.
I mean if that didn't give you goosebumps then I don't know what else would. But that feeling was amazing.
And what was the second question? I mean, it just shows, that's why we're here. That's why we came to play for the SEC. We believe it's the best conference in baseball. And I mean the history shows that trophy, where that trophy has gone multiple times.

Question :  Riley and Ty, seems like you guys have so much fun. The team chemistry is up the roof. Can you just talk about the momentum you guys are having and how much fun you guys are having playing together?
RILEY COOPER: The chemistry is crazy. Just so fun to be around the guys and what better place to be. And so we're just having a blast doing it.
TY FLOYD: Our team chemistry has been amazing all year. Us pitchers are all really, really close. We support each other and (indiscernible) so much to each other. And when we have so much success, we're very happy for them when they have a lot of success.

Question :  Jac, can you talk about the pitching, the dominance of what you got to see from your guys today? And breaking some Omaha records scoring all those runs today.

Answer : JAC CAGLIANONE: Yeah, I mean, our bullpen has been really solid throughout the whole postseason. They've really done a great job stepping up for us as hitters when our production rates aren't too, too high. And having a guy like Fic step up and do exactly what he did today was amazing. I'm just happy for him.

Question : For all four athletes, could you all talk about what was going
through your mind when the final out was out and the dogpile and the celebration?

JORDAN THOMPSON Answer: I mean, I got the first two ground balls of the inning.
And after I got that second out, I kind of looked at Gavin and almost started tearing up.
But knowing that we have to get one more out, I wanted that last ball, too.

But I just can't be more proud of my guys and the way that we came out all year and just competed and fought through adversity. When guys went down, guys stepped up.
That just speaks about the character about our team and the way that we just handled our business and own our deal every single day.
So it's very rewarding for what we were able to accomplish, not only tonight, but the whole season.

THATCHER HURD Answer : I mean, that is the greatest feeling in the world. And it's being a national champion, but it's with who we did it with, every single guy right here and every guy in that locker room. It means everything.

DYLAN CREWS Answer: Yeah, man, I think we were all fighting for that last out, you know? The greatest feeling in the world. I mean, we've had some tough days in the fall, long days, just grinding it out.
We call it two-a-days where we literally sleep at the field and train twice a day. I mean looking back I wouldn't trade anything for that, for those moments right there, because this is where we're at now. This is the reason why we did all that stuff and it's just a great feeling.

CADE BELOSO Answer: I had a different perspective, being in the dugout on that last out, but just hearing the crowd finally starting to realize what's happening. You look over in the dugout. You're seeing so many smiling faces.
I'm holding Sammy Dutton in my arm and he's just so happy. And watching that last strikeout, you can't put a price tag, can't put any feeling, words into that. It's so exciting and it's the sense of gratification. It's awesome, and it's everything that we work for.
