Story 84

Post-Game Interview
with George Mason University
Head Coach, Tony Skinn, & Players,

Jared Billups & Darius Maddox

Opening Statement  from Coach Skinn : "Yes, there's, um, you know, first and foremost, is a very, very good win against a very good American Conference team. You know, I think that we came in on Wednesday and had a really, really good practice after a day off and you always get worried about your guys when they take a day off and you have a three day prep. And I thought that we came in and we were really locked in from start on Wednesday, and then we just kind of build through the week had another good one on Thursday and by Friday, I was a little worried that we were having too many good practices and we were going to kind of just you know, phase out on game day and early game our first one but these guys have been locked in all weekend. I'm just proud of this one because this is a big big time win"

Question : You mentioned a good American Conference for for you to play out of conference so early in the year. How does that help you for later on in the year to play out of your conference?

Answer : Yeah, I mean, you know, it's a very, very competitive league. You know, we were trying to be as strategic as possible early on in non conference and you know, these games are hard to come by, you know, when it's all said and done. Nope, there's no opponent that you can't respect. Guys are getting beat, you know, different nights. I'm all across the country. And so it's one of those things where scheduling is very hard for us at this level, just because, you know, I think we sit right at that cusp as an intern program where nobody really wants to play you. But you know, we were pretty strategic in putting this schedule together. You know, we'll have a chance to go back down to East Carolina next year. And that's a good team. They're still figuring it out. But, you know, this is a very, very good win for us and just kind of puts us and gives us momentum, you know, going into NJIT next week and eventually to Tennessee and to Toledo Toledo to hard road games.
Question : And then my final question for you, as I mentioned to the players, you know, you are a mason alum. What's it like to come back to the university that you played for to coach and teach these guys the Mason way?

Answer : It's honestly man, it's been it's been it's been everything you know, it's it's not every day you get a chance to put on you know, obviously I don't have the jersey on but it's not every day you get a chance to represent the Alma Mater that you went to a place that you know changed my life gave me an opportunity. I would have never guessed, you know, 20 years ago when I made that commitment to come to George Mason, and I'd be sitting in front of you guys right now. And so, you know, each possession each half each game that you know, it means the world to me. And that's going to continue to be you know, the case of a very, very long time

Question : Can you guys talk about what it's like? To play for your coach who
is a George Mason alum. And can you guys talk about your perspective from today's wins?

Darius's Answer : First things first. I think it's amazing Coach skins especially because like he knows the perspective of a player and those minut details he can give you, you know, just little tips on it and stuff like that.

Jared's Answer : But no, because there's a great time Coast can also he's a point guard and you know, they went to the final phone when he was leaving them charged. So just learning from him. And then just getting to where he got you know, he's able to guide us in the great leader. And then on a whim perspective, we're just like you said good when we've locked in, you know, all week locked in on Scout just going at it in practice. So just all came together during the game. You can see it was a great one
